The Ed Goal/Majors Filter for Baccalaureate Degrees

The purpose of this document is to provide colleges with the required steps to configure their baccalaureate degree programs for the CCCApply Ed Goal/Majors Filter for Baccalaureate Degrees.

About the Community Colleges Baccalaureate Degree Program

The California Community Colleges offer bachelor's degree programs through the Community Colleges Baccalaureate Degree Program. This state-authorized program provides affordable four-year degrees in specific, high-demand career and workforce training areas, designed to be unique to the community college system and not to duplicate degrees at the University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU) campuses. Currently 18 CCC colleges offer bachelor’s degree programs.

To support this effort, enhancements have been made to the CCCApply application to streamline the enrollment process for students interested in obtaining a CCC baccalaureate degree quickly and easily without having to wade through the college’s full list of the majors to find the approved Bachelor’s degree programs.

Overview of the Ed Goal/Majors Filter for Baccalaureate Degrees

CCCApply has implemented several Ed Goal/Majors filters over the years, primarily to allow colleges to filter or control the display of their majors and programs to applicants based on a set of college-defined categories and/or the applicant’s Education Goal selection.

The Ed Goal/Majors Filter for Baccalaureate Degrees allows colleges offering baccalaureate degree programs the ability to only display their CCC Bachelor’s degree programs to the applicant if they choose the Education Goal option to “Obtain a California Community College baccalaureate degree”.

General Things to Know

  • The Ed Goal/Majors Filter for Baccalaureate Degrees is designed for colleges offering Bachelor’s degree programs; however, using the filter is optional.

  • The filter has only been implemented in the CCCApply Standard Application.

  • In 2025, COMIS added a new field value to the SB14-STUDENT EDUCATION GOAL field to gather data on baccalaureate degree interest. The new value is: “P - Obtain a California Community College baccalaureate degree”.

  • CCCApply has now added the new value (P) to it’s own Education Goal field <edu_goal>, and the response option to the Education Goal question drop-down in the application.

  • The addition of this new <edu_goal> value does not require any action by the college relative to data delivery.

  • The new response option will ONLY appear to the applicant in the list of Education Goal options if the college has configured at least one of their majors with one of the two baccalaureate degree Award Types; otherwise the new Ed Goal option will not display.

  • Configuring your majors with the appropriate Award Type, and thus enabling the filter, requires access to the CCCApply Administrator.

To request authorized access to the CCCApply Administrator, please email CCCTC Staff Support for assistance at staffsupportccctc@openccc.zendesk.com.

How It Works

Enabling the Ed Goal/Majors Filter for Baccalaureate Degrees filter is quick and very easy.

The filter is based on a simple design:

  • IF the college has one or more Majors with Award Type = Y (Baccalaureate of Arts (B.A.) degree) OR = Z (Baccalaureate of Science (B.S.) degree)

Then…

  • Display the response option “Obtain a California Community Colleges baccalaureate degree” in the Education Goal drop down menu

And…

  • IF response option is selected by applicant (“Obtain a California Community Colleges baccalaureate degree”) in the Education Goal drop down menu

Then…

  • ONLY display Majors with Award Type = Y or = Z in the Major drop-down menu in CCCApply.

  1. Configure the Award Type for each CCC Bachelor’s degree program in the Majors module in the CCCApply Administrator.

  2. At least one (or more) Major must have a BA or BS Award Type set to enable the Ed Goal/Majors Filter for Baccalaureate Degrees functionality in the CCCApply application.

Configuring Award Types for Majors

The Majors module in the CCCApply Administrator is where you can add or edit the details of your Bachelor’s degree programs. Setting the Award Type value for each Bachelor’s of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor’s of Science (B.S.) major is required in order to enable the Ed Goal/Majors Filter for Baccalaureate Degrees.

Learn how to add and edit majors in the Configuring Majors section of the CCCApply Administrator User Guide.

About the Award Type Setting

  • Setting the appropriate Award Type ensures your major is included in various Ed Goal/Major filters

  • The major’s Award Type does not appear to the student in the application.

  • The Award Type field is not a deliverable field.

  • The Award Type value for a Bachelor’s of Arts (BA) major = “Y Baccalaureate of Arts (B.A.) degree”

  • The Award Type value for a Bachelor’s of Science (BS) major = “Z Baccalaureate of Science (B.S.) degree”

To set the Major Award Type:

  1. Log into the CCC Administrator using your unique college URL.

  2. Select CCCApply Administrator from the Applications drop-down in the header.

  3. Select CCCApply from the Applications drop-down list.

  4. Click the Majors link from the modules menu bar to display the Majors table.

  5. To add a new major, click the Add Major button to open the Add Major screen.

  6. Follow the steps for Adding a Major in the CCCApply Administrator User Guide.

  7. Click on the Award Type field to display the list of available award type options and select the option that best aligns to your baccalaureate degree program.

    1. For a Bachelor’s of Science (BS) program, select “Z Baccalaureate of Science (B.S.) degree”

    2. For a Bachelor’s of Arts (BA) program, select “Y Baccalaureate of Arts (B.A.) degree”

  8. Review settings and click Save to add the new major.

Once saved, the new major is added to the Majors summary table where it can be edited or archived as needed.

Configuring Major Categories for Baccalaureate Degrees

The Major Categories filter is another tool that can be implemented to work with the Ed Goal/Majors Filter for Baccalaureate Degrees. If implemented, categories can add an additional layer of grouping and filtering of your baccalaureate degree majors.

The Major Categories filter allows colleges to group together related majors, programs, and degree types offered at their institution using broad academic categories, such as meta-majors, education goal paths, or any custom category groups that can help focus student interests and explore different areas of study before selecting a single major, which is required at the time of application.

Learn how to Configure Major Categories in the Major Categories Implementation Guide.

About Configuring Major Categories

Custom categories can be added and applied to your baccalaureate degree majors or you can select from your existing categories. If implemented correctly, applicants are required to select a major category first from the Category menu before selecting a baccalaureate major from the filtered Majors drop-down.

Notes About Major Categories

  • Category names are restricted to 100 characters each.

  • No limit to the number of categories that can be defined and associated to an individual major; however, if every major should be aligned to at least one category.

  • A category can be added, edited, disassociated, with you baccalaureate degree in the Majors module in the CCCApply Administrator.

  • Categories, also known as response options/values to the <major_category> field, are case-sensitive and must be spelled correctly and spaced consistently.

    • If a category is accidentally misspelled or if extra spaces are added, the system will consider it a separate and unique category and add it to the list of categories.

  • When adding a new or existing category in the "Add/Edit Major" modal, you MUST HIT ENTER after adding each (case sensitive) category.

  • If even one category is implemented across your Majors, the Major Category drop down will display in the application user interface.

  • Please take time to plan your Major Categories implementation carefully. We recommend reviewing the Major Categories Implementation Guide.

Display of Major Categories: When adding a new category to a new or existing major, you must hit "Enter" after entering the category name in the Categories text input field. Categories will display in the Summary table in the order they were created. However, in CCCApply application user interface, categories display in alphabetical order.
