Manage CIP Codes in COCI
A CCCCO Admin can edit CIP codes and create new CIP codes on the Manage CIP Codes page. To access this page, go to Site Administration > CIP Codes from the left navigation panel.
Refer to the notes below for important information about this task:
Note: If you are creating a new CIP code, the numbering and name for the TOP code must align with the Program and Course Approval Handbook published by the Chancellor’s Office.
Note: College Submitters may view CIP codes for reference, but they are not allowed to edit or create them.
Edit a CIP Code
From the left navigation panel go to Site Administration > CIP Codes — you are taken to the Manage CIP Codes page.
You can search for a CIP code that you wish to edit by using the following search criteria:
Status — Active or Inactive.
Leading 2 Digits — The first two digits of the code.
TOP Code Alignment — Indicates whether or not the CIP code has been aligned to a TOP code. The options are Complete or Incomplete.
Name — You can search by a keyword in the name of the CIP code.
Click Edit in the Action column of the CIP code list for the CIP code that you wish to edit.
You may edit the 2 Digit Series and 4 Digit Series. Any changes will build into the CIP Code entry. Note that normally the CIP code numbering is not changed unless during a major review process.
You can also change the Name for the code. Note that the CIP code name is not usually changed unless during a major review process.
The checkbox under Status allows you to activate or deactivate a CIP code. This is a commonly made change for a CIP code.
The TOP Code Alignment area allows you to associate your CIP code with a TOP code so that when a College Submitter selects the CIP code in a program submission form, the options in the TOP code field of the program form will be limited to the code(s) that you designate.
To associate a TOP code with a CIP code, select a TOP code in the Crosswalk TOP Codes field and then click Add to Crosswalk.
The TOP code will then appear in the TOP Codes Associated with CIP Code area of the page.
To disassociate a TOP code from your CIP code, click Remove in the Action column.
Create a New CIP Code
From the left navigation panel go to Site Administration > CIP Codes — you are taken to the Manage CIP Codes page.

2 Digit Series — The first two digits of the code.
4 Digit Series — The secondary set of digits after the decimal point.
CIP Code — No manual entry needed. The system produces this entry from the variables that you have entered in the 2 Digit Series and 4 Digit Series fields.
Name — Enter a name for the code.
Make a selection for Status by selecting or deselecting the checkbox to make it active or non-active.
Use the TOP Code Alignment Crosswalk to align TOP codes to the CIP code that you are creating.
Click Save Changes to add your CIP code to the system.
