Problem / Issue

The current version of CCCApply applications (uPortal v.X) is not currently designed to be responsive when viewed on a mobile phone or a tablet device, thus greatly impacting the student experience for students who are trying to apply on their smartphone.

According to a recent article in Campus Technology, "seventy-eight percent of college-bound students have access to a mobile device and are using mobile during the college search process; and 51% prefer to have college websites adapt for mobile display".

New data shows how interested college-bound high school students are in using a mobile device:

  • 78% have access to a mobile device
  • 73% are interested in campus-specific mobile apps
  • 68% have visited a college website on a mobile device
  • 51% prefer to have college websites adapt to mobile display
  • 43% use mobile devices for ALL of their web browsing

Furthermore, 62% of students want to complete the following forms on a mobile device?

  • 67% - Open house registration
  • 67% - schedule an appointment or visit
  • 67% - calculate costs
  • 62% - calculate scholarships
  • 62% - register for classes

In another Campus Technology article, dated July 2015, New Mobile App Enables College Application Via Smartphone, "A company whose focus up to now has been developing customer relationship management (CRM) systems for university admissions offices has introduced what it says is the first mobile app that would allow prospective students to complete all of the admissions process via their smartphones.

TargetX launched its Online Application app less than two weeks after it acquired Uversity, another company that offers mobile apps to help admissions officers and prospective students deal with the admissions process.  "We reached out to students, who are often overwhelmed during the application process," said TargetX CEO Sasha Peterson. "What they really want is help and guidance available where they look most often, their phone."

TargetX's new online application app allows the prospective students to fill out all necessary forms on their smartphones, continually saves them and provides an algorithm to give students estimates on how long the application process will take them."

CCCApply Data Analytics for Mobile vs. Desktop

Data stats across one week in June show that 30% of students are still attempting to complete the CCCApply application on their mobile device, even though the application had not yet been adapted for mobile.

With the new mobile-support work underway, we'll be tracking actuals vs estimated mobile users via Google Analytics.

CCCApply Standard Application

Data from:  June 16 - July 15, 2019

Total Users:  368,987

  • Desktop = 253,499  (68.5%)
  • Mobile = 104,121 (28.2%)

Proposed Solution

Gary Thompson was approved to produce a series of wireframes  and then once created - review with stakeholders (Apply team, Product manager, Program & Tech Center Managers, and then Advisory committee.

Regarding the technical project:
<<

Approach: Code, responsive code that looks good in a mobile environment;

Not doing the revision of all the styling (not the CSS)

Dawn said that the Schedule, it was driving the scope
